Holding My Own
In order to make the paper in Holding My Own I crumpled each sheet of double gelatin-sized paper and held it within a walnut dye bath: the dark brown lines imbedded in each sheet are drawings of each hold. In addition to the lines in the paper created with my hands, I also folded it like maps are folded before I dyed it. The drawings on the surface of the paper are shapes and shadows that are what I remember from places I have been captured in photographs taken of me or by me. Making these drawings of imagery from my memories on paper that I made to look like maps was a way for me to understand and hold many small things in one place. In turn, I was able to navigate how they all fit together into the larger narrative of my life.
